BUILT OVER GENERATIONS
Founded in 1864, Templestowe Cricket Club is one of Victoria's oldest surviving cricket clubs. For more than 160 years, generations of players, families, volunteers and supporters have helped shape the club we know today.
The story of the club is closely intertwined with the history of Templestowe itself — its pioneering families, its changing community and the generations who have pulled on the club colours.
WHERE IT ALL BEGAN
In the early days of Templestowe, cricket was an important part of life in the growing township. Many of the district's pioneering families helped shape the community, and their connection to the game became part of the foundation of the club's long history.
Through changing competitions and generations, Templestowe teams continued to take the field, building a tradition that has endured for more than a century and a half. From the early teams pictured here to today's Titans, cricket has remained at the heart of the club's story.
THE EARLY YEARS
By the early twentieth century, Templestowe had established itself as a competitive force in district cricket. The club entered the Reporter District Cricket Association in 1905–06 and soon became one of the competition's strongest sides.
Templestowe fielded teams from 1905–06 through to 1913–14, again in 1915–16 and from 1917–18 to 1918–19, with a second XI also competing during several of those seasons.
Success followed. The club won four premierships during this period, including an undefeated B Grade season in 1910–11. Promoted to A Grade the following year, Templestowe lost just one match on its way to another premiership. The second XI also claimed the B Grade title in 1912–13, while the club defeated Ringwood in the 1918–19 grand final.
JOSEPH BEALE — A CLUB LEGEND
Few players have left a mark on Templestowe Cricket Club like Joseph “Joe” Beale.
Born in 1887, Joe began his Templestowe career in 1906–07 and quickly established himself as one of the most dominant bowlers in district cricket.
Between 1906–07 and 1913–14, Beale took an extraordinary 479 wickets in just eight seasons, including 93 wickets at an average of 3.93 in 1910–11.
His cricket career was interrupted by the First World War, but Joe returned to Templestowe in 1919–20 and continued as the club's leading bowler through to the end of the 1932–33 season.
A REMARKABLE DAY WITH THE BALL
In January 1910, Joe Beale produced one of the most remarkable bowling performances in the club's early history, taking 13 wickets in the match, including 8/22 in one innings.
